AS Media - Films to Watch!

Now my little Media "grasshoppers" (now if you don't know which film "grasshopper" comes from then you need to do some serious research!), I am recommending the following films to you because I truly believe that you can not be proper Media Studies students until you have watched and appreciated the brilliance of some of these films! Watch them immediately! They are not all Thrillers, but ARE all amazing. Remember that you are looking specifically at the openings of films - even though you should definitely watch the WHOLE film, analyse just the openings and include on your blog.

There are 25 of them so you have loads to choose from! Amazon do really good deals, or just go to HMV and buy a stack load really cheap!

Sunday, coffee, duvet cover, film, blogging ... perfect.

Wednesday 20th July - Cover lesson

You will be in Y6 so can use the computers to add to your blogs. Please complete the tasks on the Blog Tick List that I gave you last lesson (also on my blog) and make sure that everything is included on your blog in as much detail as possible.

I would also suggest googling other A-level blogs and see if  they have included anything on their blogs that you could use. Type something like 'A2 Documentary Blog' into google and see what you can steal!

I will be checking all your blogs to see how you're getting on. Please email me if you need anything or have any questions.

Good luck! Have a brilliant summer! I'll see you in Year 13!

Codes and Conventions of a Documentary

  • ·   People being interviewed, framed in a medium shot, medium close up or close up.
  • ·    Interviewees framed to left or right of the screen. To show a range of shots when having more than one interviewee.
  • ·   Framing with the rule of thirds. Eyeline is a third of the way down the frame.
  • ·   Interviewees looking at the interviewer, not the camera.
  • ·   Mise en scene, the background reinforces the content of the interview.
  • ·   Interviews are never filmed with the light behind, the light is always in front of the interviewee.
  • ·   Questions the interviewees are being asked, are edited out.
  • ·   Cutaways are put into interviews for two reasons: 1. To break up the interviewand to illistrate what the interviewee is talking about. 2. To avoid jump cuts when questions are edited out
  • ·   Cutaways are either: 1. Archive material 2. Suggested by something said in the interview and therefore filmed after the interview. 3. Sometimes aspects of the interviewee are filmed with another camera, such as extreme close ups of eyes, mouths and hands and used as cutaways
  • ·   Graphics are used to anchor who the person on screen is and their relevance to the topic of the document.
